My daughter’s school hid the fact that she had decided to be known as a boy at the beginning of the autumn term, she was only just 13 at that time. Despite having several meetings with her head of year during that term about other matters, they still did not tell us. We found out by accident from another parent with a child in her year. We did request to see their transgender policy and it was kafkaesque – it repeatedly conflated sex and gender (in one instance in relation to health care – which is terrifying), promoted an affirmation only approach, misrepresented equalities legislation and downplayed the effects of binders, blockers and hormones and advocated keeping information from parents. From a parent’s perspective it was horrifying. During this time other things  happened too that were concerning – for example correspondence from us wasn’t passed on and in one meeting I know I was lied to about the contents of the Equalities act.

The past few months have been dreadful and the schools actions, In my opinion, reprehensible.
